I'm desperately trying to go on the Literary London Study abroad trip this summer. It's a program that would really enhance what I get out of the Brit Lit portion of my major and I really think it would be a great experience. However, as it turns out there are little to no funds for summer study abroad programs anymore. I met with two different people in the Study Abroad office and between the two of them I was able to find two scholarships. That's it. And they're incredibly competitive so it doesn't look good. Another option would be the Summer Scholars undergraduate study program, but I'm afraid the deadline to apply for that has already passed. I have to look into it more.
Part of the problem is that it would actually be cheaper to study abroad a semester through Lux or an ISEP exchange program than to study for 6 weeks in London this summer because I can use my current scholarships for the semester long venture. Sounds great, but there are very few programs that I would really be able to benefit from as far as my English Literature major goes (considering I want to study American literature) and I have all but one Miami Plan class finished. So really the only option would be for me to take a bunch of Anthro classes, which isn't a great option in itself. All in all, if I did the semester abroad program I would be doing it merely for the sake of being abroad. It wouldn't really help me get closer to my degree, and in fact might push me back a semester so that I will have to go all four years instead of being able to graduate a semester early.
If you can't tell, I'm leaning towards this summer program. From the suggestions and responses my parents have given me, it seems that they think this would be best for me regardless of the money situation. So I guess we'll just have to figure it out.
